Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena said big-ticket Vedanta-Foxconn investment was expected to generate one lakh jobs

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena will hold a massive protest in Pune’s Talegaon on September 24, against the loss of big-ticket Vedanta-Foxconn investments in Maharashtra. Former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray will lead the ‘Jan Akrosh Andolan’ against the shifting of the semiconductor construction project to neighboring Gujarat. The move is aimed at the estranged Shiv Sena faction of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the current BJP-led government.

Vedanta-Foxconn would have invested Rs 1.54 lakh crore and was expected to generate one lakh jobs. A Shiv Sena spokesperson said, “Through ‘Jan Aakrosh Andolan’, we want to ask the government about the future of those youths who have lost employment opportunities.

The spokesperson said that the present government has shifted the Vedanta-Foxconn project to Gujarat, causing huge loss to the youth of Maharashtra. A press release issued by the party said that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi-led government had laid the foundation stone for the project to be located in Talegaon.

The project was “nearly finalized” due to the efforts of the state’s then Industries Minister Subhash Desai and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, it said. But after the change of government and because of its inefficiency, the project is lost to Gujarat.

The Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav has strongly criticized the current regime in the state for the loss of this investment. The protest comes in a line of events that the party has planned as a show of strength against Shinde’s attempts to control the Shiv Sena.

A statement by the Uddhav-led faction also read that the ‘Jan Aakrosh Andolan’ was being organized because “dreams of one lakh youth were crushed” due to project losses of Rs 1.54 lakh crore. “What should the youth do now? What is the state government doing to provide employment? We will seek answers,” the statement read.
