Kabul: At least four people have been killed and 10 others injured in an explosion near a mosque in the Afghan capital.

The blast was the latest in a series of fatalities in recent months targeting Friday prayers in mosques, some of which were claimed by Daesh.

Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran said: “When people tried to come out of the mosque after the prayer, there was an explosion.” “All the casualties are civilians, the exact number is not yet clear.”

The Italian-NGO-run emergency hospital said it had found 14 people from the blast, four of whom had died.

The blast took place at Wazir Akbar Khan, formerly home to the city’s ‘Green Zone’, the site of several foreign embassies and NATO, but now controlled by the ruling Taliban.

The mosque has been the target of attacks in the past, including an explosion in June 2020 before the Taliban returned to power. In that attack the Imam of the mosque was killed and many people were injured.
