Chandigarh: AAP MLAs took out a march against the cancellation of the special session of the Punjab Assembly here on Thursday. The party legislators, holding placards with messages of “Stop killing democracy” and “Operation Lotus Murdabad”, slammed the Congress and the BJP for allegedly joining hands and working against holding a special session of the state assembly.

However, the AAP MLAs were stopped from proceeding towards the Governor’s residence. The police had put up barricades about a kilometer away from the assembly premises. The protesting MLAs sat where they were stopped and started raising slogans against the Congress and the BJP.

No state minister was seen participating in the protests. The decision to take out the march was taken after Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann chaired a meeting of AAP MLAs in the Assembly premises on Thursday morning to decide on the further course of action after the special session was cancelled.

The AAP MLAs also hit out at Governor Banwarilal Purohit for withdrawing his earlier order calling a special session on Thursday. “It (not allowing the special session) is totally unfair. The state government can call the assembly session,” said tall MLA Gurmeet Singh Khudian.

He alleged that the governor decided to cancel the session “at the behest of higher officials”. “The BJP is doing wrong and democracy is in danger,” Khudiyan alleged. Moga MLA Amandeep Kaur told PTI that earlier permission was given to convene the assembly session and later it was canceled by the governor.

Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh also termed the governor’s move as a “murder of democracy”. He also spoke out against the alleged Operation Lotus of the BJP and said that the saffron party is trying to bring down the governments by offering money.

Shaming the AAP government in Punjab, the Governor on Wednesday thwarted the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s plan to convene a special session of the Assembly to move a confidence motion. The governor on Thursday recalled an earlier order convening the special session, saying legal opinion was sought after the Congress and the BJP approached the Raj Bhavan saying that the rules of the House did not allow it.

While AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann slammed the governor for not allowing the assembly session, saying it raises a big question on the country’s democracy, opposition parties called the government “constitutional and legislative”. Praised the priest for preventing him from breaking. practices and procedures”.

The AAP government in Punjab had called for a session to bring a confidence motion, days after it accused the BJP of trying to topple its government. AAP had recently claimed that at least 10 of its MLAs were approached by the BJP with an offer of Rs 25 crore to topple the six-month-old government as part of its ‘Operation Lotus’.
