MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – 25th November, 2022) EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said on Thursday that Brussels is concerned about recent firings at Twitter and shortcomings in social media content moderation practices.

“@Twitter’s recent firings and today’s #HateSpeech Code of Conduct results are a source of concern. In my meeting at Twitter HQ, I underlined that we expect Twitter to meet its voluntary commitments and comply with EU rules, including #GDPR & #DSA,” Reinders tweeted.

In another tweet, the commissioner urged IT companies “to review their content moderation practices and address deficiencies soon.”

“It is disappointing that most IT companies participating in the EU Code of Conduct have slowed down their responses to #OnlineHateSpeech notifications,” he said.

On Thursday, the European Commission published the results of its evaluation of the Code of Conduct on Countering Illegal Hate Speech on the Internet. According to the report, the data showed a significant decrease in the results of companies related to notifications and actions in 2022.

The Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people with knowledge of the departures at Twitter, that the social network had closed its entire Brussels office, prompting European officials to worry about whether Twitter would comply with EU rules on content moderation.

On October 28, Musk completed the purchase of Twitter, which cost him $44 billion. After the takeover, Musk reshuffled the company’s day-to-day operations, including firing Twitter executives who were responsible for the platform’s privacy and cybersecurity, as well as thousands of regular Twitter employees. The significant policy changes have caused a wave of concern, including among senior US officials. US President Joe Biden said on November 4 that Twitter is spreading “lies” around the world.

Earlier in the day, Musk said the social network would restore blocked accounts next week after a majority of users voted for a “general amnesty.”

On November 19, Musk reinstated the page of 45th US President Donald Trump, whose account was suspended from January 8, 2021, two days after the riot in the US Capitol. Twitter on Monday reinstated the account of the American rap artist, record producer and fashion designer, whose legal name is Ye, after it was blocked on October 9 for policy violations. The rapper is believed to have been banned for an anti-Semitic tweet, although the network itself did not provide an exact reason for the suspension of his account.
