Delhi Police arrests AIIMS doctor, his sister for duping accomplice of Rs 16 crore

New Delhi: The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police has arrested an AIIMS MBBS doctor and his sister for cheating on the basis of forged documents and causing wrongful loss of about Rs 16 crore to another doctor.

The accused have been identified as Dr Cherian and his sister Meenakshi Singh, residents of Bengaluru, Karnataka. The accused person Dr Cherian completed MBBS from AIIMS, Delhi and Meenakshi Singh completed BE (Computer Science) and MBA from IIM.

The two were arrested from a resort in Dindigul in Tamil Nadu while they were trying to evade investigation and were at large. According to the police, “Both the accused siblings, who came along with friend and partner Dr Gandharv Goyal to start an app-based business structured on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of health.”

He also said “However, when the investment in the company flourished, both the accused persons ousted Dr Gandharv Goyal on the basis of forged and fabricated documents”.

“This is a case of fraud, criminal breach of trust by the Director and forgery to repurchase the shares of Dr. Gandharv Goyal on the basis of forged documents with other Director and partner Dr. Gandharv Goyal for a nominal amount of Rs. 900 only” it said.

“Approximately equal percentage of shares were issued to new investors for a total consideration amount of about Rs 16 crore. Hence, the partner and director Dr. Gandharv Goyal suffered a wrongful loss of about Rs.16 crore,” it said. During investigation it was revealed that the complainant was one of the directors and shareholders of Synapsica Technologies Pvt Ltd. Ltd.” with its office at Jasola, Delhi. Both the accused became directors and shareholders in the said company.

In the month of December 2019, the company became successful and got selected in Y-Combinator (world’s best accelerator program) and also invested around Rs 5 crore from various investors.

In addition, a company by the name of “Synapsica Healthcare Inc.” was also incorporated in the United States. A subsidiary of Synapsica Healthcare Inc. was incorporated under the name Synapsica Healthcare Pvt for the expansion of business in the United States and in India. Ltd. for expansion of business in India.

Police said that the accused persons Dr Cherian and Meenakshi hatched a criminal conspiracy and obtained shares of Dr Gandharv Goyal with the help of DocuSign Append on the basis of forged signatures.

“During investigation, it came to light that the accused persons Dr Cherian and Meenakshi formed a company in the US to attract more investors in their company Healthcare Pvt, after a criminal conspiracy was hatched between them. Ltd and later re-purchased Dr Gandharv Goyal’s share in the company M/s Synapsica Healthcare Inc. on the basis of a forged signature created by Gandharv Goyal’s DocuSign App.

“Later, they issued the same percentage of shares against the total consideration amount of about Rs 16 crore. For new investors from India as well as the United States of America,” the police also said.

During investigation all share agreements and term sheets were seized from the above mentioned accused persons, ROC data was obtained and analysed, bank statements were taken and analyzed and minute books were obtained and analyzed. A case has been registered under sections 409, 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at PS EOW, New Delhi.
