LHC seeks response on petitions seeking voting rights abroad

Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has sought response on a plea for provision of voting rights to overseas Pakistanis, ARY News reported.

Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of the LHC heard petitions against non-provision of voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.

After preliminary arguments, the Lahore High Court (LHC) sought answers from the federal government, ECP, NADRA and others concerned.

The plaintiff said that foreigners sending foreign remittances to the Pakistani country and depriving them of their right to vote is against the Constitution of Pakistan. The court was requested to pass an order for the provision of voting rights to foreign Pakistanis.

Earlier in the month of May, the National Assembly approved a bill depriving foreign Pakistanis the right to vote, reversing the reforms introduced by the previous PTI government for their voting rights.

After the passage of the bill, foreign Pakistanis will not be able to cast their vote from abroad, although they can cast their vote while in Pakistan.

In addition, it has been suggested that seats reserved for the Pakistani expatriate should be introduced and the matter was referred to the Standing Committee for final approval.
