Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Thursday that a special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly would be convened on September 27, a day after the Punjab Governor withdrew an earlier order convening a special session on Thursday to move the confidence motion.
“It was unanimously decided that the assembly session would be called on September 27,” Mann said, adding that issues such as electricity and stubble burning would be discussed in the session. He further said that he would approach the Supreme Court against the move to withdraw the order convening the special session.
The decision comes after a major embarrassment for the AAP government in Punjab, with Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday scuttling the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s plan to convene a special assembly session to move the confidence motion.
Meanwhile, AAP MLAs also took out a march in Chandigarh on Thursday to protest against the cancellation of the special session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The AAP MLA was seen holding placards – “Stop killing democracy” and “Operation Lotus Murdabad”. The AAP MLAs criticized the Congress and the BJP for allegedly joining hands and working against holding a special session of the state assembly.
However, the AAP MLAs were stopped from going towards the Governor’s residence. The police had put up barricades about a kilometer away from the assembly premises.
The protesting MLAs sat where they were stopped and started raising slogans against the Congress and the BJP. No state minister was seen participating in the protests.
The Governor withdrew the special session order saying he had sought legal opinion at the Raj Bhavan of Congress and BJP, arguing that rules of the House do not allow. The AAP government in Punjab had called for a session to bring a confidence motion, days after it accused the BJP of trying to topple its government.
AAP had recently claimed that at least 10 of its MLAs were approached by the BJP with an offer of Rs 25 crore, in a bid to topple the six-month-old government as part of ‘Operation Lotus’.
