“Stay alert”: Ministry of External Affairs issues advisory to Indians in Canada

OttawaIndia on Friday issued an advisory to Indian citizens and students in Canada to remain vigilant amid rising crimes and anti-India activities in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that the Indian missions in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested them to investigate these crimes.

“There has been a sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in Canada. The Ministry of External Affairs and our High Commission/Consulate in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested them to investigate the above offenses and take appropriate action. These crimes have not yet been brought to justice in Canada.”

“In view of the increasing incidence of offenses mentioned above, Indian citizens and students from India in Canada and those visiting Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant,” the statement said. The advisory also states that Indian citizens and students of India in Canada may register through their respective websites or the MADAD portal madad.gov.in with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto and Vancouver.

“The registration will enable the High Commission and the Consulate General to better engage with Indian nationals in Canada in case of any need or emergency,” the advisory said. The advice comes a day after India on Thursday termed the so-called Khalistan referendum conducted by separatist groups as a “ridiculous exercise”.

Speaking at a weekly media briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said India had conveyed concerns to Canada about the use of its territory by politically motivated “extremist elements”. He said India has strongly objected that “politically motivated exercises by extremist elements” are allowed in a friendly country like Canada. “We would call it a ridiculous exercise. It was a ridiculous exercise by extremists and fundamentalist elements supporting the so-called Khalistan referendum in Canada,” Bagchi said.

He said India has taken up the issue with the Canadian authorities and reiterated its respect for India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “The matter has been taken up with the Canadian authorities through diplomatic channels. The Canadian government has reiterated that they respect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and will not recognize the so-called referendum that is taking place in Canada.
