Tamil Nadu BJP official arrested for making objectionable remarks against Raja
BJP district president Uttamramaswamy was arrested here on Wednesday for allegedly making derogatory speeches and using abusive language against A Raja and Dravidian party workers over a DMK MP’s recent controversial remarks against Hindus.
Police said that at a meeting organized by Hindu Munnani, Uttamaramasamy allegedly used derogatory language and made some remarks against Raja, as well as derogatory remarks against social reformer, ‘Periyar’ EV Ramasamy. Based on complaints from Periyar workers, police picked up Uttamaramasamy early on Wednesday and took him to Peelamedu station for investigation.
This led to a tense situation in the area as a large number of BJP workers reached the spot and staged a sit-in on Awanashi Road demanding their immediate release. They also demanded the arrest of Raja. After interrogation, Uttamramasamy was arrested. A local court sent him to 15-day judicial custody. BJP workers burnt the effigy of Raja.
Police said cases were registered against the BJP man under various sections of the IPC, including 153 (abetment with intent to cause riot). BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit president K Annamalai, party’s Mahila Morcha president and MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and party’s agriculture wing president GK Nagaraj condemned the arrest and DMK’s action against its MP Raja for his alleged derogatory remarks against Hindus. accused of not doing.
In a series of tweets, Annamalai wondered why police action was not taken for Raja’s alleged anti-Hindu remarks, while the BJP leader who interrogated him has been arrested. He said the party would not bow down to such actions of the ruling DMK.
Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi said the manner in which the arrests were made was condemnable and added that the party would face the matter legally.
