The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed that the jailed Trinamool Congress leader from Birbhum in West Bengal had won Rs 1 crore in lottery in January before his jail term. The shop owner, identified as Bapi Gangopadhyay, who issued the lottery to Mandal, was summoned by the CBI to the Nizam Palace on Wednesday (November 2).
Mandal is currently in jail in a cattle-smuggling case, and while the CBI was probing his case, the whereabouts of properties in his name surfaced in oblivion.
According to sources in the central agency, Mandal got the lottery ticket from a shop named Ganguly Lottery in Bolpur. CBI said that the agent was asked whether Anubrata had bought the ticket himself or through someone. Apart from this, the owner was asked if Anubrata had ever played the lottery before.
On questioning the shop owner, the CBI now speculates that the lottery may have been issued for cattle smuggling or illegal black money laundering. The matter was brought to the notice of the CBI after opposition parties in West Bengal claimed that relatives of several Trinamool leaders, including Anubrata, were winning the lottery of a reputed company.
On the other hand, according to CBI sources, Anubrata’s close aide Atanu Majumdar was also summoned on Wednesday. Atanu appeared in the afternoon. The CBI now wants to know the details of the financial transactions between Anubrata and Atanu, who were questioned for a long time.
